Outreach/Field Assignment
IntroductionTop ↑
The Field Assignment a integral component of the DTS or FMS training program. It is a 8 to 12 weeks cross cultural outreach practicum structured to help students integrate previous classroom studies with practical service application. Students travel out in small teams with leading staff member/s to live in a cross cultural setting where they live out what they have learned. This vital ‘hands-on’ component engages students in supervised practice activities (mercy ministry, preaching, evangelism, drama, conducting seminars etc.) that provides opportunities to reinforce and integrate the knowledge, values and skills learned in the classroom.

The Field Assignment (or outreach) phase for the DTS normally starts immediately after the Lecture Phase but may be deferred for up to 12 months in special circumstances and with prior approval of the School Director.
Students usually have a choice to either stay on in another part of NZ or go abroad. The School leader and staff will decide on the locations. Students may, in some circumstances and after discussion with the course leaders, be allowed go to places or churches of their choosing.
As the Field Assignment is considered part of the school, students who do not complete the Field Assignment will not be seen as passing the DTS.

The 8 to 12 week FMS field assignment program helps students integrate previous classroom studies with practical service. Students serve on teams that conduct marriage, relationship and parenting seminars. They may also have opportunities to help plan and conduct family camps or even participate in a limited amount of supervised family counseling opportunities. For students participating with families, the field assignment offers unique opportunities for family members to minister together as a team.
As the FMS is a second level school, the Field Assignment is optional, but it is regarded as a vital part of the training programme as it allows you to get hands on experience in sharing and teaching on the FMS topics.
The school leader and staff will decide on locations. Students usually have a choice to stay on in another part of New Zealand or overseas. Students may be allowed, after discussion with the course leaders, to go to places or churches of their choosing to do their practical outreach.
The Field Assignment normally starts at the end of the lecture phase but may be deferred for up to 12 months depending on circumstances and with the permission of the school leaders.
